Albin Counter Gambit position shown on an online chess board after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5

The Queen Gambit move is so famous and reliable that Adolf Albin created the Albin Counter Gambit just to go up against the Queen move, and it starts after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5.

Albin Counter Gambit does not believe in defending against the Queen Gambit move, but instead aggressively attacks the white piece with the first move of this, making it a sacrifice of the pawn. It is a great chess move to practice on an online chess platform.

FAQs

  • Black sacrifices a pawn without guaranteed compensation. If White plays correctly (avoiding 4.e3?), White keeps the extra pawn and the game becomes a slow win for White. One Black mistake often loses the game.
  • The Lasker Trap happens after 4.e3?? Bb4+ 5.Bd2 dxe3! 6.Bxb4 exf2+ 7.Ke2 fxg1=N+. Black promotes the pawn to a knight with check, then wins White's queen on the next move. The trap wins material by force.
  • Yes, at club level and rapid tournaments. Grandmasters and 2200+ players avoid it. The Albin works best as a surprise weapon when opponents don't know how to defend accurately.
  • Grandmasters have perfect technique and know the best defense. They prefer openings where Black gets equality or advantage. For them, the Albin's risk (losing a pawn) is greater than the reward (practical compensation).
